Minnesota State Typing Standards:
3rd Grade - 10 WPM
4th Grade - 15 WPM
5th Grade - 20 WPM

WPM = Words per minute


  • Always keep your fingers on the home row
    (feel the bumps on the F and J keys)
  • Always reach with the correct fingers
    (return your fingers to the home row after each letter)
  • Keep your eyes on the screen
    (not the keyboard)
  • Use the "Stats" link to view your progress
  • Go back and review letter lessons any time


What you learn in the first sections of the program:

Home Row  - lessons 1 - 23                 (3%)
Top Row  - lessons 24 - 51                   (8%)
Bottom Row  - lessons 52 - 87             (12%)
Simple Sentences - lessons 88 - 175   (16%)

Typing Grades are based on the following guidelines:

3rd grade - 10 WPM correct finger placement for home room

4 - types at a 4th grade level:  12% progress (knows the entire keyboard) and/or above 15 WPM
3 - 3% progress and above
2 - 2% progress
1 - 1% progress

4th grade - 15 WPM with correct finger for each key

4 - types at a 5th grade level:  above 15% progress in the typing program and at or above 20 WPM
3 - between 9% and 14% progress and at 15 WPM
2 - between 3% and 8% progress
1 - below 3% progress

5th Grade - 20 WPM without looking at the keyboard

4 - types at a 6th grade level:  at or above 25 WPM
3 - between 15 - 24 WPM
2 - between 9 - 14 WPM
1 - between 0 - 8 WPM

Our School
We believe in creating a safe and challenging learning community with the goal of bringing together social and academic learning throughout the day to foster and support engaged, caring, and responsible learners.
