2022-2023 World Music Ensemble for 5th Grade Students

At O. H. Anderson, we have 4th & 5th grade choirs open to all students giving them a focused singing opportunity on a weekly basis with a performance during the fifth grade program.  The World Music Ensemble helps to fill the void left by the absence of a band or string program at our elementary school.

This year, fifth grade students will have the opportunity to audition for the World Music Ensemble that will rehearse Friday mornings before school from 8:15-8:55 a.m. starting November 18th and following the schedule on the back of this letter.  The students will prepare music that will be performed as a stand-alone ensemble as well as music to accompany the 5th grade choir and programs on May 18 and 19, 2023.  This ensemble, with its flexible format and instrumentation, will explore written and improvised music from around the world using world drumming methods, Orff mallet instruments, and hand chimes. This small ensemble will meet the following criteria in order to achieve its stated mission and goals:

  • Students will need music reading skills similar to that which would be acquired in two years of piano or violin instruction.  The audition will consist of the student performing a prepared piece on their given instrument, sight reading, and call and response exercises.
  • Students need to make a commitment to practice the assigned music and attend all scheduled rehearsals and performances.
  • This year the fee is $10 (if you are in 5th grade choir, you do not need to pay this fee again).  This fee will be used to cover the cost of purchasing music.  You do not need to register and pay the fee on the EPay site at this time. Please wait until after auditions. Please let Mr. Pontious know if this fee stands in the way of your child participating in World Music so that assistance can be provided.
  • The shirt for performances is $15. Let Mr. Pontious know if this cost is prohibitive so that assistance can be provided. If your student is in choir, they just need to purchase the World Music Ensemble shirt.

Do not pay any of these fees until your child’s placement in the ensemble is confirmed
